Wonderful Original .31 Caliber Volcanic Lever Action Pistol
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful gun. It is an original .31 caliber Volcanic lever action pistol. These guns have always been quite scarce, Flayderman's Guide states they only made 850 of this pattern. These guns load by pushing the brass lever under the barrel forward which compresses the spring so the end section pivots to the side for loading the self contained .31 Volcanic style cartridges. The original lever and spring are intact and they are functional. It uses the lever style action like that of the later Winchester rifles. This one functions with the portion that ejects the spent cartridges functional but it sticks sometimes. The makers improved this over the years but this gun was state of the art for its day. When you move the lever, that doubles as a triggerguard forward, it cocks back the hammer and loads the cartridge. When you put the lever back in place, you are ready to pull the trigger to fire. This one has matching serial numbers of 323 including the stampings on the underside of the original the 2-piece walnut wood grips. This is the version that was produced with the 3-1/2 inch barrel. This one still has the "NEW HAVEN, CONN PATENT FEB. 14,1854." marking clearly visible along the top of the barrel. These guns were made by the New Haven Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. Production of this pattern of pistol went on from 1857 until 1860. These brass framed pistols aided in the design of the future Henry Rifle and subsequently the Winchester rifle. The brass frame of this gun has a wonderful untouched patina all over. The mechanics of the gun works on the positions but like most of them, it sticks up some times. On the handle of the gun it has the original 2-piece walnut wood grips that still retain some of the original varnish from the factory. The metal parts of the gun have some traces of the original factory finish underneath the thick attic style patina. If you have ever wanted one of the rare Volcanic pistols that is complete, then this one is for you.
