Excellent Non-Excavated Charleston Light Infantry "Thistle" Button
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the most attractive uniform buttons I have been able to offer. This is the very rare uniform button that was worn by the Charleston Light Infantry of South Carolina. These buttons were identified by Daniel J Binder in a 2007 North/South Traders Magazine article. He was able to verify that they were for the "Charleston Light Infantry" (Charleston SC Military Unit with Scottish Heritage). The center of the button has the thistle which is a common This button has "Nemo Me Impune Lacesset" around the edge which is Latin for "No one provokes me with impunity." This was the motto of the Royal Stuart dynasty of Scotland. The soldiers in Charleston were proud of their Scottish heritage and added the image of the thistle and the motto to the button. This button is in exceptional condition without any dings or dents. The detail on the face is crystal clear because it still has the original factory gold gilding in just the right places. On the reverse of the button, it has the original back and shank intact. There is a small section of the uniform as well as the original thread. The cloth covers the Scovills maker marking of Waterbury, Connecticut. During the Civil War, they served with the 17th Regiment of South Carolina militia. It is only the second example of this scarce button that I have ever been able to offer. Don't miss this jewel!
