This belt buckle is the beautiful state seal belt buckle for the state of Maryland. This is the version that is illustrated on page 168 of the expanded edition of Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates by Steve Mullinax. He tells how shortly before the war some of the military units from Baltimore purchase the sword belt buckles from the firm of Emerson Gaylord in Massachusetts. He mentions how at that time there was no state funding or control of volunteer militia in the state of Maryland. Therefore many of the Maryland volunteers in the Confederate Army wore these buckles into the great rebellion. He tells of how they are made of cast brass and then impressed into the metal die to make the details stand out even more crisply. This one has detail that is just simply superb. It depicts the oval shape with the Maryland great seal in the center. The seal shows the quartered coat of arms in the center with an eagle up above. There is a farmer supporting the shield from one side and the other side is held up by a fisherman. They both stand on ribbon with the motto of the state of Maryland in Latin. It reads "Crescite et Multiplicimini" which translates to "Increase and Multiply". Around the great seal it has the stippled background. On the reverse of the buckle it has the original keeper hook brazed in place. The history accompanying the buckle is that it was found in Pennsylvania. This buckle came from the award winning collection of Don Phillips. His Confederate Belt Buckle display won numerous awards at the biggest Civil War shows across the country. This is your chance to own a buckle from his "Best of Show" award winning collection. This is an original Civil War Maryland state seal belt buckle that displays beautifully and it has the original keeper intact.
