Here is an amazing original Civil War hat from Pennsylvania. Approx. This is an original enlistedman's hat from the Civil War of the pattern known as a "Forage Cap". It is officially known as the U.S. Model 1858 pattern blue wool forage cap. It is produced with the deep blue cloth with the original tarred leather visor and leather chinstrap. On each end of the chinstrap, it has the 14mm brass general service eagle buttons. The eagle on the buttons have the classic look with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace int he other. When you turn the cap over, you are greeted by the original leather sweatband, and brown polished cotton lining. The hat displays well with the scattered mothing. It has areas with museum quality repairs using similar cloth stitched to interior. What makes this piece of history extra special is on the top of the hat. It has the 1/2 inch tall die-struck brass regimental number and letters "177 / PV" affixed to crown. This is the designation of the hat being worn by a member of the 177th Pennsylvania Infantry. This exact hat is illustrated on p. 87 of the wonderful headgear book by Langellier & Loane, U.S. Army Headgear, 1812-1872. This piece was once part of the Museum of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), later Civil War Museum of Philadelphia. The 177th Pennsylvania Infantry was a 9-month outfit recruited mostly from central Pennsylvania. It mustered into service at Camp Curtain in November 1862, was assigned to break up the contraband trade along the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal at Deep Creek in March 1863, and served guard duty near Washington before mustering out at Harrisburg in August 1863. This is a great looking hat that you can see it saw service. It is an honest piece of history from the Keystone State!
