Here is a great group of piece that have spent the last 10 years on display at Appomattox National Park Museum. These pieces were from the estate of Colonel George Briggs of the famous 7th Michigan Cavalry. George G. Briggs was from Battle Creek, Michigan and enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 7th Michigan Cavalry on October 13th 1862. He rose to the rank of Colonel in May of 1865. During his service Briggs had a valiant and interesting history. The records show that he was taken Prisoner of War at Buckland's Mills, Virginia on October 91th 1863 but escaped two days later. He was also wounded at the Battle of Five Forks, Virginia on April 1st 1865 when he was wounded in the leg. The group consists of a well worn pair of spurs, made of plated iron with straps & buckles. It has the body portion of his wartime red silk sash. There are two post-war cabinet card photos of Briggs circa 1861-1862 as 1st Lieutenant 7th Michigan Cavalry. There are several 1865 orders & endorsements for Colonel Briggs when commanding 7th Michigan at Appomattox, one signed in ink by Major General Phil Sheridan, and another March 5, 1865 giving command of 2nd Cavalry Division to Briggs. It also has Brigg's engraved Colonel's Commission, to the 7th Michigan cavalry, signed by Michigan Governor, Henry H. Crapo. This group came from the Colonel George G. Briggs Estate and was part of the Martin lane collection. This wonderful group was on loan and displayed at Appomattox National Park Museum from 2014-2024. You get all of these pieces and a printed history of Brigg's service. This is your chance to get a fantastic group from a famous member of the famous 7th Michigan Cavalry.
