Very Scarce B. Douglas of South Carolina Attributed C.S. Staff Officer Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful piece of Confederate officer edged weaponry. This is an original dress sword for a Confederate staff officer. Upon 1st glance, it looks like the famous version made in Richmond by Boyle & Gamble but this one is much more scarce. This one has the full-length blade that measures 28-1/2 inches. The Richmond made swords have a well crafted fuller on each side and this one is much simpler. You can see the hand forging that was done by the bladesmith. The handguard is also very similar but the detail work is much less sophisticated. The "CS" is vividly clear with the star above that isn't nearly as prominent as the Boyle made swords. On page 23 and 24 of the Photographic Supplement of Confederate Swords book by Albaugh he tell of swords made by B. Douglas & Company of Columbia, South Carolina. He tell of how these sword have the guard that is NOT cut for use with a sword knot. It also has the much more detailed work on the large quillion. The pommel cap on this example has the smooth sides compared to the very detailed work produced in Richmond. On the handle of this sword is has the gorgeous original grip intact with the leather and small and finely twisted brass wire wrapping. The sword is missing the scabbard and is priced accordingly. Over the years we have had dozens of the Richmond made officer's swords but this is only the 3rd one of these that we have been able to offer. Don't miss your chance!
