Autographed CDV of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Uniform
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is your chance to own an authentic signature of the most famous of all Confederate Generals, Robert E. Lee. This is an authentic CDV image of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It is a nice clear from-life CDV of the general in one of his most famous poses. This one is a studio portrait of Lee in military uniform, taken by Vannerson in 1864. The portrait was then sent to Edward V. Valentine for his sculpture of Lee. It is the more common of two standing poses taken during this session. It shows Lee in his best Confederate uniform. It shows the stately looking Lee with the General Stars on his collar and his sword by his side. Lee served with distinction in every post that he ever held. To this day, he is the only man to Graduate West Point Military Academy without getting a single demerit. Lee was offered the Command of the Union forces but declined the position so he could fight with his home state of Virginia and the Confederacy. What makes this image so special, is that the back of the card has the ink signature of General Lee. He signs it in his classic style "R.E. Lee" in dark Brown ink and as you can see the signature is relatively large in size. When you turn the card over, you are greeted by the Richmond, Virginia photographer Mark of the firm of the "VANNERSON & JONES" Photographic Gallery who were located at No. 77 Main Street in Richmond. It also has the pair of George Washington stamps which add a fantastic twist to the CDV. The stamps are where the tax was paid on the paper and they have the hand written date of June 20th 1865. When you think about this, it means that the image would have been purchased right after the end of the War (76 days after Lee surrendered at Appomattox). It makes you wonder if it was purchased by a Union soldier who had it signed by the leader of the Confederacy or by a Southern patriot still loyal after the 4 years of war. This is your opportunity to own an original autographed image of the most famous of all the Confederate Generals, Robert E. Lee.
