This is an attractive original Civil War Mounted Artillery saber and scabbard. This one has a fine full-length blade with nice date and inspector marks at the base. BUT! The stamped at the base of the blade were put there in MODERN TIMES and is priced accordingly. Someone removed the original markings and stamped with with an 1860 production date to "Improve" it and make it much more valuable. The front of the blade has the "US" mark as well as the inspector initials of "J.T.". You can also clearly see the stamped "1860" Production date. These are desirable marking but because of the construction of the sword we know it would have been made later, probably 1864 or 1865. We know this because the sword is a Type 2 design of artillery and if the 1860 was correct for 1860 it would be a Type 1 design. On the back side of the blade it has the scroll style maker's mark of "AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS." and a Type 1 sword would have the straight line maker marking. Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a great golden color to the brass. On the bow of the handguard, it has the "J.T." inspector initials for the inspector, John Taylor. On the handle of the sword, the leather grip has a very pleasing look and the double twisted brass wire is original and tightly in place and it has a fine look. The sword is accompanied by the original metal scabbard with both mounts intact as well as the throat at the top. This is a great looking Civil War artillery saber with scabbard but has an incorrectly stamped production date.
