Click on an image to enlarge
Here is the 1862 dated revised edition of the 1861 U.S. Army Regulations tactics manual. On the title page it states that it was printed by the Philadelphia firm of Lippencott. This is the classic style of Army regulations that were used throughout the Civil War by union officers. It has 559 pages detailing everything from uniform regulations to instructions for the quartermaster's Department. It has many charts and graphs. The overall size of the book measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches in overall size. It has the original cover with the traces of the gold gilding on the spine. As you can see the book has some light wear but all of the pages appear to be present and accounted for. On the inside of the cover it has a great brown ink presentation inscription from two soldiers who served with the state of Kentucky. It reads "Presented to / H.K. Milward / Lieut. & Adjt 18th KY Vols / by / John W. Campbell / Quartermaster / 7th KY Cavalry / Louisville, KY / Sept. 15 1862". The records show that Millward served with the 18th Kentucky Infantry from February of 1862 until July 18th 1865 and he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel and Colonel by Brevet. Campbell enlisted on June 11th 1862 and served with the 7th Kentucky Cavalry until February 3rd 1863. Printouts of each of their service history will accompany the book.
