Baltimore B/M South Carolina State Seal Coat Button by Canfield SC11
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a scarce version of South Carolina button. It is a great looking non-excavated state seal uniform coat button for the state of South Carolina. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." As you can see in the image the button still retains some of the original gold gilding in the factory in the recessed areas. The original back and shank are present on the reverse. It has back with the retailer mark of the Baltimore firm of Canfield Brothers & Company firm still visible. It is one of the tougher version of South Carolina buttons to find. It was manufactured around 1860 by the firm of Steele & Johnson. This is the button that is listed as figure SC244a1 in Tice's button book and SC11 in Albert's button book. This one is in very nice non-excavated shape and will be a fine addition to your collection.
