Original Non-Dug Model 1855 Style .69 Caliber Musket Bullet Worm
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original gun worm for a Civil War era .69 caliber musket or rifle. This is the classic style patterned like the model 1855 style that would have been used with the large caliber muskets. This lets us know that it would have been made after 1855 and this model stands a better chance of being used during the Civil War. These were used for the cleaning out of the musket bore. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. It is like the ones illustrated on page 108 of the gun tool book. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition.
