This is a great piece of history from the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic or G.A.R. was the organization made up of Union Survivors of the Civil War. They held reunions and erected monuments to the men that fought for the north during the Civil War. This medal was to commemorate the 1914 Encampment G.A.R. on April 21-22, 1914 that was held in St. Johnsbury, Vermont the reverse side of the celluloid says "Freedom and Unity", with a farm scene underneath. The top bar has the words Annual Encampment Delegate. The original pin is on the reverse of the top bar. This piece came from the collection of noted collector Don Limpert (1927-2022). Don Limpert was a long-time collector of memorabilia from the veterans of the Civil War with an emphasis on the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans of the Civil War organization. He saw the possibilities of combining his vast collection of GAR memorabilia with an original Grand Army of the Republic post building that was available to purchase in downtown Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He purchased the building in 2012, and the building became the Michigan Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Museum. After his passing in 2022, his collection was sold and now is your chance to own a piece of that astounding collection.
