Original Civil War Allen & Wheelock .32 Caliber "Sidehammer" Revolver
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a good looking gun. It is an original .32 caliber sidehammer pattern revolver made by the famous firm of Allen & Wheelock. According to Flayderman there were only about 1,000 of these revolvers made and they were only made from 1859 until 1862 with this gun being towards the latter date. The gun has the maker mark on the top side of the barrel along with the 1858 patent date. It reads "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTER, MASS ALLEN'S PAT'S SEPT. 7 NOV. 9 1858". The barrel is full-length at 4 inches which is the standard size barrel you encounter on these guns. They go from 2-7/8ths inches to 5 inches in length. The action works crisply on all positions. The original 2-piece walnut grips are present and they have a pleasing amount of the original factory varnish remaining. On the inside of the grips as well as the on the gun itself it has the matching serial numbers of 730. These guns are very similar to the Colt "Root" revolver but are a lot more affordable. This is a very attractive gun for any Civil War era weapons collection.
