Early Pattern 1861 Dahlgren Bowie Knife Bayonet for the Plymouth Navy Rifle
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is one you don't see very often! It is an original relic condition bayonet for the US model 1861 Navy rifle. The Eli Whitney firm contracted in 1861 with the Government to manufacture 10,000 of the .69 caliber 2 banded rifles. By 1864 they fulfilled this contract for the guns but the majority of the guns used the saber style bayonets. Only 1,800 of this bowie knife style bayonet were delivered to the Government. This is the early pattern of this bayonet. The records show that only 300 of those were delivered in 1861. They are designed with an unfullered, spear point blade that measures 12-1/8th inch blade. As you see, the blade was pitted and has the ancient look to the metal. The handle of the bayonet has the massive brass frame with the walnut wood grip. This one has the original locking spring intact and it is fully functional. On the top of the grip it has the "DR" initials in script letters. These are the inspector's initials of Daniel Reynolds, who approved the bayonet or use by the military. You can also see the small anchor marking by the inspector letters. This anchor was stamped when they did an inventory after the Civil War and it lets us know that it was still in government hands and therefore it was likely used. This one displays beautifully from all angles like it hasn't been touched in 100 years with an attic patina.
