Non-Excavated 1864 Patent Stafford Shell With Bolted Sabot
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool Civil War patented cannon projectile. This is the version that is illustrated on page #255 of the 1994 book by Melton & Pawl about cannon shells. It is the Stafford Patent shell. The patent was issued on December 20th 1864. This was too late to get the projectile into the field which is why we don't see excavated specimens. This one is a nice non-excavated shell with the old humidity pitting. The fuse is missing in action. At the base of the shell it has the full brass sabot intact. The sabot on a Stafford shell bolts onto the body of the shell and this one still has the bolt intact. Some folks call these Yankee Brookes because of the attachment of the sabot. This one has the bolt solidly intact. That is a neat addition to a great shell. This is a fantastic shell with the original sabot.
