Here is a wonderful and interesting piece of history from the Civil War. This is an original stock certificate from one of the shipping companies that ran goods through the Union naval blockade. These ships risked life and limb to get needed supplies to the South to try and win the War. These ships were privately funded by patriots to the South but also by businessmen that hoped to profit off of the venture. This is one of the stock certificate issued by the Importing and Exporting Company of Georgia and is so marked along the top of the paper along with the image of a steam ship. In the print, it states that this is one share of a value of $1,000 issue price. On the left hand side, it has the image of the sailor on the dock with the ship in the background. It was issued from Savannah, Georgia on June 12th 1863 with the hand written issue date. The certificate was issued to "A.S. Johnson" with his name in fine brown ink. The paper measures 10-1/4th inches by 4-3/4ths inches in overall size. The paper has aged to a beautiful tan color. It has an archival tape repair on the reverse to one of the fold lines. Also on the back of the paper, it has the printed ink where ownership could be transferred. The certificate is accompanied by an old piece of paper with typed information from a June 1953 publication of the Georgia Historical Quarterly. It states that the Importing and Exporting Company of Georgia purpose was to import "nothing but useful and necessary articles & to take Govt. freights when desired inward." Their first ship was the "Little Ada" in 1864. By the end of the year they had four ship in operation running the blockade between Bermuda and the Bahamas and Wilmington, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina. It states that when Sherman entered Savannah, the ships were sold off. What a fantastic piece of blockade running history!
