New Jersey Marked 1848 Dated .69 Caliber Springfield Military Musket
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a great looking original Civil War era weapon! This one looks like it is ready for action today. It is an attractive U.S. model 1842 military musket. This jewel is from the desirable arsenal at Springfield and is so marked clearly on the lockplate. It also has the production date of 1848 clearly stamped behind the hammer. The action works perfectly on all positions. The barrel is full-length with the correct Springfield proof marks at the breech of the barrel. It has both of the sling swivels present as well as an original period replacement ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. The ramrod is short but when you pull it out towards the end it displays beautifully. The walnut stock on this gun displays very well. It has a rich grain to the walnut with the light bumps from being used in service. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate you can see the remnants of the inspector cartouches where the gun was approved for military service by the Government inspector. This one we know was used by a soldier from New Jersey. We know this because of the large lettered "NJ" stamp at the side of the barrel as well as on the flat of the shoulderstock opposite of the lockplate. The guns that show up with this mark were in the New Jersey arsenal which is nice because this lets us know that this is actually a Civil War gun. This is a very attractive complete displaying and desirable .69 caliber model 1842 Springfield with the desirable New Jersey markings.
