This is a great looking original Civil War soldier's belt and buckle. You can tell that the soldier used this one for quite a while which gave it a wonderful look. It has a fine original U.S. belt buckle with letters that stand out for a great look. On the back of the plate it has all three of the belt hooks remaining. This is the style that has the arrow style hooks on the back of the buckle. The buckle is accompanied by an original black bridle leather belt. The belt displays well and it has the wear you expect one to have that saw service and it is still nice and pliable. The belt has lost the brass length adjuster eons ago. On the back of the belt, you can see the tougher to find Civil War maker's mark of Garcelon & Covell still visible. You can still see the correct Civil War maker's mark of Garcelon & Covell of Lewiston, Maine and it also has the 1863 production date. This is a nice maker's mark because according to the maker's book they were in business with a September 11th 1863 contract with the U.S. Government contract to produce 5,000 sets of .58 caliber infantry accoutrements. With this marking we know that this one is a true Civil War percussion cap box and not later production. This is a fine looking authentic Civil War U.S. belt and buckle with a neat maker marking.
