Authentic Civil War Soldier's Canteen With Cover, Stopper & Shoulder Strap Present by Jewett
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an excellent original Civil War soldier's canteen. This is the classic smooth side pattern that was carried by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. This is the pattern with the pewter spout at the top and this one is present and in fine shape. It even has the original stopper and chain present after all of the years. About 1/4th of the cork is still present. On the side of the spout you can see the maker's mark that is still visible that reads "A JEWETT". It was made by the firm of Albert Jewett & Company of New York City. Jewett held contracts to make canteens for the Government in 1863 and 1864. It has all three of the original loops straps present and complete around the sides of the canteen. The authentic shoulder strap is present and accounted for and has a nice ancient look to the material. It still retains a nice amount of the original brown wool cover which is a nice touch as most of the time the wool is completely missing. This is a solid original Civil War maker marked production canteen with stopper and strap remaining and it displays well.
