Scarce Applied Bridge U.S. Model 1798 Socket Bayonet
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one that you don't see offered every day. It is a variation of the socket bayonet listed as figure b37 on age 23 of the book by Robert Reilly entitled American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards. He labels them as the U.S. model 1798 Contract Era Bayonets. They are easily distinguished by the applied bridge on the socket. This one has the bridge but you have to look closely to see where it was applied. The bayonet is nice and dark all over as are most of the guns of the time. It has the salt and pepper look all over and was exposed to the elements eons ago. The blade is triangular full length and is completely unmarked. The socket measures 3 inches. This is a very scarce pre-War of 1812 bayonet for your relic room wall.
