Scarce Braille Fuzed Civil War 12# Borman Pattern Cannonball
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine excavated 12# Civil War cannonball. This is the Borman pattern that went into the 4.62 inch bore diameter cannon that is better known as the 12# gun. At the top of the ball is the zinc Borman pattern time fuse. The fuse has the slight deterioration from the years in the ground but still displays well and has a nice gray tone. What is special about this ball is that it has the Braille version of the Borman fuse. Where the standard Borman fuse has numbers these Braille fuzes have the raised dots. You can still see the number that has a few of the raised dots very well with another being partially visible but the others have deteriorated. The body of the ball has nice iron and has been cleaned for display and preservation. This shell has been drilled out and has had the powder removed to make it safe for display. All of our artillery shells have been disarmed this was to make the safe for your collection. This is a very nice Civil War cannonball with one of the toughest to find fuzes of the Civil War.
