What a cool scene on this late Civil War Confederate Bond. This one was issued from Richmond, Virginia on December 2nd 1864. This bond was issued for one hundred dollars and is written in ink. It also has the ink notation that it was issued to "P.J. Fowlkes". One thing that makes this one interesting is to whom it was issued to, P.J. Fowlkes. When I looked his name up, I found that Paschal Jennings Fowlkes (1813-1882), was from Hyde Park Farm, is a historic home and farm complex located at Burkeville, Nottoway County, Virginia. The home is on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Homes. It measures 11-1/2 inches by 8-3/4ths inches in size. It has the naval battle scene at the top of the bond. The scene depicts the ironclad, the CSS Virginia sinking the USS Cumberland in March of 1862. This is the pattern that is listed as a CR141 in Criswell's Bond Book and as B286 in Ball's Confederate Bond Book. They state that there were 8,842 of these issued and this one is numbered "4480". What a wonderful piece of history from the late days of the Confederacy!
