Civil War Bullseye Pattern Canteen With Rohrman Maker Mark
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine authentic Civil War soldier's canteen. This is the classic style known to collectors as the "Bullseye" pattern with the reinforcement rings on the sides. It still has an attractive look and all three of the original strap loops are still present on the sides and nice enough to be used with the sling today. It has the majority of the original cotton sling intact and you can see that it saw a lot of service. The original pewter spout is present at the top of the canteen. On the side just below the lip of the spout you can still see the traces of the Civil War maker's mark of J.Hall Rohrman of Philadelphia. The maker's book states that Rohrman's only military connection was with his Civil War production of canteens. He had only in 1863 and 1864, of which this would be one of those contracts. This is a nice original Civil War canteen for your collection.
