Lookout Mountain Recovered Civil War 3 Inch Percussion Hotchkiss Shell
Click on an image to enlarge
This is neat piece! It is a very nice Civil War 3 inch Hotchkiss patent cannon shell. This is the earlier pattern Hotchkiss that used the brass percussion style fuse at the top of the shell. This one has the original brass percussion fuse in the fuse hole at the top of the shell. This shell was designed to explode upon impact. It is also the earlier pattern that does not have the flame grooves on the sides that were designed to help the flame from the cannon blast reach the fuse at the top. The entire lead sabot is still present around the waist of the shell. As you can see it was fired and you can clearly see none rifling marks from the cannon barrel. This one has the entire iron base cup of the shell is still present and you can still read some of the letters of the patent marking on the iron of the base cup. The verbal history that accompanied this shell is that it was recovered at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee near Chattanooga. This shell is in nice shape all the way around. This is one that any artillery collector would appreciate having it in their collection.
