Beautiful & Rare Confederate 3 Inch Archer Shell with Flame Grooves
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very scarce piece to find. it is the Confederate Archer shell and it has the full sabot intact. Any Archer projectile is tough to come by but the shells are much tougher to find than the solid shot counterparts. On page 81 of the 1993 edition of the Civil War artillery shell book by Dickey & George it has a variant of this type of shell pictured. The one in the book is the earlier style that is made without the flame grooves on this side. This one has the hand cut grooves which were to help the chances of the flame reaching the fuse to make it explode. This one was made with them which shows why they still didn't explode. The lead sabot that would have been on the base of the shell was thrown off when it was fired. This allows us to see each of the 3 ribs on the base of the shell. The iron on this shell is quite nice and you can even see the original mold lines on the side of the body of the shell. This one has been nicely cleaned and coated for display and preservation. It is a wonderful piece of Civil War Confederate artillery.
