Original Model 1860 Cavalry Saber by C. Roby of Massachusetts
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice looking original Civil War era cavalry saber in scabbard. This is the model 1860 pattern that was the most carried style during the Civil War. This one has the blade with a dark mottled gray color to the steel with a well worn look. The tip of the blade has been used and is rounded as you can see in the images. It is priced accordingly. At the base of the front of the blade are the remnants of the production date but I can't make out the last digit. You can see some of the "US" mark and the inspector initials of "A.G.M.". These are the initials of the inspector that approved the blade for military use, Abner G. Mosman. On the back of the blade are the remnants of the maker's mark of the C. Roby Company of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Christopher Roby was one of the premier makers of Civil War cavalry saber and as you can see they made a quality product. The guard and pommel cap have a great dark copper color to the brass. The leather grip is original with a fine look. The leather has a pleasing untouched tone and it still retains all of the double strand brass wire as well. The sword is accompanied by an original metal scabbard. The sword is the model 1860 and the scabbard is the model 1840 pattern that is heavier and more solid that a model 1860. This scabbard has the original mounts, rings intact as well as the original throat and drag. This is a nice solid Civil War era cavalry saber that doesn't cost thousands.
