New York Marked Original Flint! Model 1816 Flintlock Pistol by Simeon North
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very cool looking old military pistol. This is the U.S. model 1816 flintlock pistol. It was made by the firm of Simeon, North of Middletown, Connecticut. You can still see the maker's mark on the lockplate along with the eagle and "US" mark. The barrel is .54 in caliber size and is full-length at 9-1/4th inches. According to Flayderman's guide, they only made these for three years from 1817 until 1820. During that time, they only made 19,374 of them. This one has a very pleasing light gray tone all over. It looks like it just came out of the attic after two centuries. The first thing that makes this one special is that it is in the original flintlock. Most of the time, these were converted to percussion for use during later conflicts. The mechanics still catch on both of the positions just as it should. At the breech of the barrel it has the "US" stamping to go along with the "P" marking showing that it was approved for military use. It also has the vividly clear "S.N.Y." stamp along the top of the barrel. This marking lets us know that it was used by a soldier in the state of New York. The stock of the gun has a very attractive look to the American walnut. It has the ancient dark tone with a couple of cracks from long ago. On the flat of the stock, opposite of the lockplate, you can see traces of the inspector cartouche of "LS" this stands for the inspector, Luther Sage, who approved the gun for military service. It has the modern made wooden ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. This is a nice original model 1816 United States Military flintlock pistol by Simeon North in the original flintlock condition used by the State of New York.
