Providence Tool Company Civil War Steel Handcuffs From the Matthew Forte Collection
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat piece of police historical memorabilia. This is and original pair of Civil War patented handcuffs. This set is made by the Providence Tool Company in Providence, Rhode Island. They were one of the companies that manufactured the .58 caliber Model 1861 Springfield style rifles as well as 1860 cavalry sabers. These cuffs are similar to the Darby model steel handcuffs with two rings and swivel link, and they no longer have the key. They have the remnants of the markings of "Prov. Tool Co.". They are in fine well worn condition. This is the like the set that is illustrated on page 82, American Police Equipment, A Guide to Early Restraints, Clubs & Lanterns, by Matthew G. Forte. This set is from the personal collection of Mr. Forte. The last couple of images show the cover of his book and of page 82 showing this style of set. This set is in very fine shape for display.
