1st Vermont Cavalry Version of the Civil War Dragoon Brass Stirrup

Here is a fine original Civil War brass stirrup. This is the style that is officially known as the US model 1833 but they were produced on up through the Civil War. This is a variation of the pattern illustrated on page 268 in 269 of the book American Military Saddle 1776 - 1945 by Stephen Dorsey and Kenneth McPheeters. The piece is made of a single piece of cast brass. It stands 5 1/2 inches tall and is 4 1/8th inches across the base. The bases 1 1/2 inches wide. On the top side of the base it is notched with triangles shape indentions to give the writer more traction in the saddle. What makes this one extra special is the mark on the bottom of the stirrup. It is stamped "E&T FAIRBANKS & Co. / St. JOHNSBURY VT." Fairbanks outfitted the 1st Vermont Cavalry Regiment as one of his contributions to the War effort. The 1st Vermont saw service throughout the War including Winchester, gettysburg, the Wilderness and Appomattox Court House. On the side of the stirrup, it has the "GTB" stamping. In Baird's book on Civil War spurs, he states that this mark shows up on some products of the Allegheny Arsenal. It is believed that these are the inspector initials of the inspector, Captain George T. Batch. Batch inspected items for the government including Colt and Savage revolvers. This one has a gorgeous untouched patina all over with a very attractive look. In my 30+ years in the hobby, this is the first one of these Fairbanks marked stirrups that I have been able to offer.
