Authentic War of 1812 "Cheesebox" Style Soldier's Canteen

This is a fantastic piece from the War of 1812 era. This is a wood drum soldier's canteen. This pattern is often referred to as the "Cheese box" canteen since they look like the shape of the old wooden boxes that they would age cheese inside of. This one has a very nice untouched look. It still retains some of the original brown tone paint on the outside. On page 50 of the canteen book by Mike O'Donnell it ha this marking and states that the maker is unknown but show up on only about 10% of this pattern of canteen. It still has the original small wooden nails holding the wooden pieces together. On the sides it has all three of the small leather strap loops still partially intact. These are just like the ones in the book. Most of the time they are missing in action. The hand carved wooden stopper hole at the top. The canteen hole has been adapted by using a screw style piece to create a better spout than the wooden one that fell out. It measures 7-1/4th inches across the body and is 2-3/8ths inches thick. This is a wonderful piece of early American history. I got a good buy on this one and thought I would pass it along. Don't miss this one.
