This is a lot of gun for the money! It is an original .71 caliber smoothbore musket known to collectors as the Prussian style musket. These were officially known as the Prussian model 1809 musket. These European made weapons were heavy but dependable weapons that saw service on both sides of the Civil War. Several years ago, I was allowed to do an archaeological excavation on Shiloh battlefield. In one area where we found gun parts, there were some pieces recovered of this Prussian style. These guns have always been an eye catcher because of all of the brass that was used on the furniture of the gun. It has the brass barrel bands, triggerguard and nose cap. On the top of the buttplate. It has the stampings, which include the "1828" production date of the gun. This one is nice and displays well. It has a modern made ramrod underneath the barrel. The barrel is full-length with a replacement stud style rear sight. At the base of the barrel it has the inspector proof marks still partially visible as well as the matching 1828 production date. As you can see all of the metal parts have a nice dark tone all over. The lockplate also has the clear "SUHL" production location arsenal markings. The stock of the gun has a beautiful grain to the wood and it is also full-length as is the barrel. At the wrist on the front of the stock, it has the inlaid silver shield. The action catches on both of the positions. This is a nice looking Prussian pattern musket that doesn't cost the price of a new car.
