1842 Dated Imported Civil War Artillery Sword With Chatternault Arsenal Marks
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very nice sword all the way around. It is the French made artillery pattern short sword. This is the sword that was patterned after the Roman style gladiator swords. They looked fierce but weren't too handy in up-close fighting. They are very similar to the U.S. model 1832 short artillery sword. This one is in very nice condition as you can see. It has the full-length blade that has a nice tone to the metal. There are several nicks along the edge from wear. At the base of the blade you can see the Chatternault Arsenal mark and 1842 production date still visible. The cast brass handle is in excellent condition with a very pleasing color to the brass. Several of these swords were imported before and during the Civil War and saw service on both sides of the battle. This is an excellent and still affordable piece for any collector.
