Excavated Brass Heel Tap with the Star CenterDesign
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very nice excavated piece found in Alabama. This is the brass piece that is known to collectors as a "heel Tap". They were applied to the rear of the soldiers shoe to prolong the life of the shoe itself. This is one of the ones that has the design in the center. This one has the shape of a Star but they also show up with a cloverleaf and a couple of other designs. Some people say that these shapes represent Corps badges, but there is no evidence to support that. The piece measures 2-1/4th inches wide and is 1-7/8ths inches tall. It has the wear to the edge so you can tell it was worn. This is a perfect piece of Civil War history that is still affordable.
