Have you ever had a chance at one of these' This is the famous pattern made by the Nathan Starr Company of Middleton, Connecticut. This is the scarce contract model of 1818. According to the books there were 10,000 of these pattern swords delivered. This one is the scarcer version that has the date "1821" stamped on the knuckle bow of the hand guard. It has a full-length blade that has a nice anceint tone. At the base of the blade it has the excellent original markings. It has the "US" stamp along with the inspector initials and the "N.STARR" mark. It has the inspector initials "P" for the inspector for the U.S. ordnance department. The inspector was Luther Sage, which is the "LS" initials. The iron guard is present and it still retains an attractive look. The handle has the majority of the original black leather intact. These swords were produced without the wire wrapping. The handle has the ribs that were designed to improve the grip. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is complete with rings as well as the throat and drag. These scabbards were produced with black paint from the factory. This one still retains a fine amount of the original black pain. This is a good looking original example of a scarce sword from U.S. history.
