This is a great looking excavated Civil War Confederate artillery coat button. This is the style that was run through the blockade from the firm of Hammond, Turner & Bates of Manchester England. On the back of the button it has the clear "MANCHESTER H.T.&B." backmark. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. The face has a beautiful deep green, almost black brass patina color on the large block style "A" that denotes the artillery branch of Confederate service. This is the style listed as figure CS101 in Albert's button book and CSA200 in Tice's button book. This is an excellent button all the way around.
