This is a beautiful version of South Carolina button. It is a great looking excavated state seal uniform coat size button for the state of South Carolina. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. It also has the "SC" letter for South Carolina. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." As you can see in the image the button has a gorgeous untouched golden patina. The original back and shank are present on the reverse. It has back with the retailer mark of "Ph. SCHUCKMANN . / CHARLESTON S.C." clearly visible. It is one of the backmarks that some people consider to be made after the Civil War but they list it in Tice's book and some people consider it as War date. Either way, you need one tom complete a Civil War era South Carolina collection. This is the button that is listed as figure SC262A3 in Tice's button book and SC15B in Albert's button book. This one is in nice excavated shape and will be a fine addition to your collection.
