BATTLE DAMAGED! Fredericksburg Excavated 1832 Pattern Ames Artillery Short Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
This is cool excavated original Civil War era short pattern artillery sword. These were patterned after the Roman gladiator swords with the fierce look like you see in the movies. The blade is full-length with the pitting from the years in the ground. The trophy style history plaque that accompanied the piece states that it was "BATTLE STRUCK AMES SWORD / DUG C.S. LINES / FREDERICKSBURG, VA". At one time the blade would have had the maker's mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts on the back of the blade. It would have had the large straight line stamping with the eagle that is from their earlier production years when they were in Springfield. These were made by Ames from 1832 until 1862. The front of the blade would have had the "U S" stamp with the production date. The handle is made of cast brass and has the fish scale design that was to make it easier to grip. What is amazing about this artifact is that it has had the entire pommel cap blown off. Can you imagine the force that it would have taken to make this happen? It sheared the whole cap off. The cap would have had the Union eagle design on each side. It is mounted on a pine board that measures 27 inches by 5-1/2 inches in size. This is a VERY cool relic!
