Beautiful Civil War Shako Style Military Hat Plate French Model 1860
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful looking eagle hat plate for the Civil War era shako style military hat. Most of these hat plates date from the 1850's. There is a similar plate on the front of a shako hat in the Time Life Book Series Echoes of Glory. This is one is the ones that were sold by the Civil War military surplus dealer Stokes Kirk of Philadelphia. Kirk and Bannerman bought up the majority of the Civil War surplus from the U.S. Government and sold the pieces for decades afterward. It has the spread wing eagle at the top with the hunting horn design at the lower part of the plate. This is the version that is has the pretty red and blue paint still partially remaining. On the reverse of the plate it still has had both of the original attachment prongs removed with replacement prongs added. This is the large style hat plate that measures approximately 4 inches by 4 inches in overall size. This is a wonderful original piece that displays superbly.
