Authentic Carbines
Very Pretty Early Production Model 1862 Joslyn Cavalry Carbine
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice model 1862 pattern of the Joslyn cavalry carbine from the Civil War. This one has the serial number of 1,315. It has the distinctive Joslyn style breech block that opens to the side when you lift the knob on the side. This allows you to breech load the cartridge. It shot a .52 caliber rimfire cartridge from the barrel. Since it is made without the hole on the top of the block we know it was an early made gun. They added the hole to allow the gasses from the blast to escape safely. The top of the breech has the marking of "B.F. JOSLYN'S PATENT OCTOBER 8TH 1861 JUNE 24TH 1862." On the top of the barrel it has the original front and rear sights intact. The rear sight still has the base and the original sight leafs. The bore still has the lands and grooves all the way down the barrel. At the breech of the barrel, it has the inspector initials of "T.K.L." for Thomas K. Laley. The action works superbly on all positions. The lockplate has a clear maker's mark from the Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut production location. The back of the breech block tang has the 1,819 serial number stamped into the metal. On the reverse of the gun opposite of the lockplate it has the original saddle ring intact on the bar. The stock is a deep dark tone piece of walnut with a beautiful tone all over with light service wear from use by the cavalryman. On the flat of the stock you can still see the cartouche stamp. It has the pair of stamps with the initials of "T.K.L." that matches the barrel and rear sight and stands for the inspector Thomas K. Laley, that approved the gun for military use. These early pattern Joslyn carbines have the brass furniture. The brass on this one has a gorgeous honey color that displays superbly. As you can see it displays quite well from all angles!
