This is a neat weapon! It is an original Civil War Colt .58 caliber military rifle. This is the classic style of the model 1861 Colt Special Military Rifle. This one has a clear 1863 production date on the lockplate along with the remnants of the Colt maker's mark and Hartford, Connecticut production location. The action works crisply on all positions. The barrel is full length most of the correct and matching 1863 production date on the breech. As you can see, all of the metal parts have a dark color and they display quite well with a well worn appearance. The original front sight is intact and the rear sight is missing in action. There are traces of the rifling in the barrel but it is very dirty and the color is dark just like the rest of the gun. The stock has an nice grain to the dark tone walnut. On the flat opposite of the lockplate as well as the side of the barrel, it has the block letter "NJ" stampings. These stamps let us know that this gun was part of the weapons that Colt supplied for the state contracts with New Jersey, during the Civil War. It has modern made replacement ramrod intact underneath the barrel and has both of the sling swivels hanging on as well. This gun has a very pleasing well worn look all over. It is a nice and honest Civil War dated .58 caliber military rifle from the famous Colt Firearms Company.
