6th Plate Ambrotype of a Confederate Soldier in Richmond Style Jacket
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original ambrotype image of a Confederate soldier from the Civil War. It shows the vividly clear young man from the chest up in his uniform. He sports the shell style military coat. What makes this one special is that the jacket he is wearing is the style known to collectors as the Confederate Richmond Depot 2nd pattern shell jacket. It has the distinctive tabs on the shoulders and is a classic style that was born by many of the Confederates of the day. This is the size that is referred to by collectors as the ninth plate which is 2 inches by 2.5 inches in overall size. These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. The image comes in a full gutta percha case for display. The case is in nice shape and only missing the lower hinge pin.
