Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful and scarce Maryland made fusil that is published in 3 books. It is featured on pages 34 and 35 of "Arms Makers of Maryland" by Hartzler and Whisker, as well as on page 331 of "American Silver-hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords: Volume I" by Daniel D. Hartzler. It is also on page 17 of "Gunsmiths of Maryland" by Hartzler & Whisker. This fusil was retailed by Hodgson and Thompson of Maryland or assembled using a British Barrel. They worked at 72 Baltimore Street in Baltimore, Maryland in 1800 and at 215 Cross Forrest Street in 1804. It is finely crafted with a 2-stage barrel with hooked breech marked on left flat with 2 Birmingham proofs. The original small silver rear sight and teardrop front sight are intact. It has the original, bayonet lug mounted on bottom, towards the barrel muzzle. The stylish flat style lockplate is crafted with beveled edges and stepped tail with a band of engraving around the edge. The center in front of the hammer is jeweler quality inscribed "Hodgson/Thompson". The brass furniture includes a full sideplate engraved with panoplies of arms. The brass trigger guard has a classic Baltimore bellflower front finial. Under the barrel, the stock has the front 2 ramrod pipes that are trumpeted. It is built with the smooth walnut stock with brass nose cap. The iron ramrod in the channel under the barrel appears to be original. The gun is accompanied by a Dan Hartzler collector's file including Identification Record on his letterhead and copies of pages in each book where this gun is pictured. The lock was originally a flintlock and has been reconverted in modern times to look as it did when it left the factory. The reconversion displays well as you see. The stock shows well with scattered marks from use and about last 4" restored on forend. This is a fine looking War of 1812 period fusil.
