This one is a knockout! This is a wonderful original Model 1840 Massachusetts Militia Staff Officer's Sword. It was finely crafted by the Ames Manufacturing Company and dates from the Mexican War era. Knight head pommel and a silver handle engraved with an acorn and leaf motif. The crossguard of the handle is designed with a chain running from the guard to the pommel cap. On the langet of the guard, it has the splendid rendition of the Massachusetts State Seal cast into the brass. The blade is full-length at 38 1/2-inches in overall length. It has a frosty single fuller 31-inch blade, profusely engraved with the Massachusetts State Seal on one side and a sizeable winged spread eagle on the other. At the base of the blade, it has the etched maker marking that reads "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield." It is accompanied by the original brass scabbard. The scabbard is beautifully engraved with a large American eagle and scrollwork and leaf engraving. Below the eagle, it has the Massachusetts Arm & Sword design. A panoply of arms is also engraved on the scabbard. On the back of the scabbard it has their applied gilded brass scroll that reads "N.P. AMES / MAKER / CABOTVILLE, MASS." The scabbard has the three hanging rings intact and is also designed with the stud on the top mount if they wanted to use the sword with a frog instead of belt hangers. This sword is a wonderful piece of history!
