Here is half of a cool Confederate cannon shell. This is a nice 1/2 of the style known to collectors as the "Atlanta" Read shell. This pattern is illustrated on page #250 of the 1993 edition of the Dickey & George artillery book. They list it as a rarity of 9 out of 10 which is about as rare as they come. These shells are very distinctive because of the base. It still has the inset portion of the long tall copper sabot and lathed style base. This one is fired and it ripped off the rest from the rifling of the cannon barrel. At the top of the shell it has the original Confederate Read style fuse intact. These get their name because they are always found in the Atlanta, Georgia area. The book even states that most shells of this style "are from sites within 40 miles of Atlanta." This one has been sliced in half and it has a cool look all over. You can show your friends the way the cavity was made as well as the sabot and fuse holder. This one is very scarce and displays well.
