Here is a very cool looking early United States weapon that is 213 years old this year. This is the EXACT gun that is described and illustrated in "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II" by George D. Moller, on pages 245-246. It is a .69 caliber smoothbore flintlock musket that were made for a state contract. In front of the hammer it has the "L. POMEROY" which stands for the maker. In Flayderman's guide he states that these were made by the firm of Lemuel Pomeroy in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They made these for New York as well as Connecticut and Massachusetts. Moller states that in November of 1809, New York contracted with Pomeroy to make 1,000 guns. The Pomeroy firm established a firm in Springfield, Mass in 1799 to manufacture plows and sleighs. When that factory burned down, they moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This gun is in the original flintlock configuration and the mechanics work well. The barrel of the gun is still full-length at 41-3/4th inches and you can still see the inspector proof marks at the breech of the gun. There are the initials "H.P." which are believe to be those of the New York Inspector, H. Peck. It has the "S.N.Y." mark for the State of New York. It also has the 1810 production date still clearly visible. The stock is a deep rich dark tone Walnut wood that displays quite well. On the flat of the stock, opposite of the lockplate, there is the circular cookie cutter style New York acceptance cartouche stamp. Inside the stamp it has the "V. / BI. / LM". It still has an original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. Both of the sling swivels under the gun are replaced but look nice. This is a gorgeous original early flintlock from the book!
