Beautiful Prussian Lion Head Artillery Sword by Ewald Cleff
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a fine looking sword! This is an original Prussian Lion Head Artillery Sword by Ewald Cleff. It has the full-length 33 inch blade and measures 381/4th inches overall. It is made with the single edge spear point blade with 23 inch wide single off-center fuller and central ridge to both sides. What makes this one displays beautifully is the crafting of the guard and grip. The sword hilt has a brass guard, backstrap, knuckle guard, and lion's head pommel. The lion has a very cool look! The hilt also features carved filigree motif to backstrap, and the langets with crossed cannons for the artillery branch of service. The handle itself is made with a sharkskin wrapped grip, and braided brass wire wrapping. Blade is etched with filigree and neoclassical designs that are partially visible. the edge has an old sharpening. The blade is maker marked "EWALDCLEFF/SOLINGEN" at the base. The sword is accompanied by the original black painted scabbard with single hanger. The last couple of inches have to be pushed firmly into the scabbard as it does not easily slide in past the handguard langets. This is a very nice looking sword!
