Click on an image to enlarge
This is a scarce original non-excavated coat size Civil War New York uniform button. The face of the button has a beautiful gold gilded tone all over. It has the script style lettering of "LG". This stands for the New York Light Guard that served during the Civil War. They were named this after 1833 but started out as the 14th New York Militia. During the Civil War they became part of the 23rf New York Militia in 1862. The original back and shank are present and it has the correct pre-Civil War maker's mark of "*R&W ROBINSON * EXTRA RICH" with the single inner ring. This is the version listed as figure NY78 in Albert's button book and NY256A1 in Tice's button book. The button displays well from all angles as you can see in the pictures.
