Here is a very neat piece. It is an original Civil War eagle cape hook. These were made using the face from a standard Civil War eagle button. It has the eagle in the center with a shield on her chest with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. The back was made of tin and has a twisted wire hook that acted on one side as a spring. The hook went through the top of a cape for holding it around the soldier's neck. On the reverse you can still see part of hook itself. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found in the 1960's in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia area. Chancellorsville was a battle between the Confederate forces of Robert E. Lee and Union General Joseph Hooker on April 30th until May 6, 1863. This one is in attractive excavated condition.
