This is a great looking cartridge box. It is one of the many cartridge boxes that were used after the Civil War for local militias and in England. The box itself has the classic styling of the tarred leather covering on the cartridge box. It has the double shoulder strap loops intact on the back of the box. Also on the bottom of the box it has the brass finial intact with the closure tab being lost to the ages. All of the leather has been tarred to make it more durable. On the outer flap of the cartridge box it has the fancy stamped brass insignia with the British Crown on top and the "53" in the center. Around the edge, it has the "SHROPSHIRE REGIMENT" marking. This regiment was raised in 1755. It served in many British Army campaigns until 1881, when it was merged into The King’s Light Infantry (Shropshire Regiment). This box would date to about the 1870's. When you raise up the outer flap it has the original wooden block intact that would have held the post Civil War style cartridges in place. One thing that makes this piece stand out from most is that it still retains the original white cotton leather shoulder sling. This really makes it stand out and display superbly.
