This is a fantastic piece of Civil War medical history! It is an original Civil War era traveling amputation medical kit. You can just image the things a piece like this kit would say if it could talk. The mahogany box is in excellent well worn untouched original condition. It measures 15-1/2 inches across and is 5 inches deep and stands 2-1/2 inches tall. The brass center plaque is present as is the brass escutcheon around the key hole. When you open the kit up you are greeted by an assortment of scalpels and tools. Several of the parts and the paper label has the maker marking of the firm of Tiemann of New York. The paper label reads "G. Tiemann & Co. / Manufacturers of Surgical Instruments / 67 Chatham St. N.Y." Tiemann was active at this address from 1863/64 to 1871. The blade are present in the lower section and they are marked by the Tiemann company. It has the removable tray. The tray holds the large amputation saw as well as the small saw that was used for the amputation of fingers and toes. Everything is present except for the bone snips under the saw and the screw style tourniquet. This is a fantastic set that displays quite well and would be appreciated by any Civil War collector.
